This year diptyque is celebrating its 60th anniversary: an opportunity to immerse yourself in everything that has inspired the House since its creation. A cavalcade of youthful creativity, 2021 will be dedicated to graphic design, encounters, nature, travel and curiosity. A year that will be filled with collections and events.
GRAPHICS ARE A PLAYFUL WAY TO LOOK AT THE WORLD.
The “pas de deux ” is a demanding dance, calling for precision and experience.
Diptyque knows this well, and has been making lines and opposite elements dance for the past sixty years: black and white, modernity and tradition, outline and motif, freedom and discipline… On the occasion of its sixtieth anniversary, diptyque continues to pursue its own path, drawing on sources from its own history in order to reinvent itself and surprise everyone yet again.
The holder invites us to play, turning it around the candle to create a constantly changing look. Overlaying motifs and lines, the juxtaposition makes the ovals dance, flickering like a flame before our eyes – light and movement coming together to hypnotise us. Coming into sharp relief on the Baies candle, moving from the circle to the diamond shape on Figuier, decked out in moiré effects on Roses and chequered on Tubéreuse, the diptyque oval disappears – only to reappear, stronger than ever.
Reflecting the participatory spirit that has characterised the Maison from the very beginning, the new diptyque collection offers a truly interactive experience for us to perceive, to smell and to feel: line, colour, gesture and play joining together in a shared surge of energy. A vibrant, twirling, pirouetting homage to the graphic creativity of diptyque.
A brief flashback: It’s 1961
Christiane Montadre, Desmond K nox-Leet and Yves Coueslant, the Maison’s three founders, former art students united by the same creative sensibility, opened the first diptyque boutique in Paris. Their geometric, minimal, picturesque aesthetic displayed a startling degree of innovation – as did their bold graphic flair and ability to produce countless optical effects. Right from the start, the diptyque codes were laid down: the oval shape, the repetition of lines and motifs, the interplay of shapes and colours. The placement of the oval – dead center – became clear, as did the unique graphic style of the Maison.
A joyful, participatory sixtieth anniversary
Adorned in an interplay of black lines set against a white background, each candle is characterized by the nature and intensity of the line: fine, overlapping curves for Baies, overlaid concentric shapes for Figuier, alternating and contrasting vertical lines for Roses. The oval appears on each but is featured differently – in counter- relief, directly or in outline. Improvising a waltz at a breakneck tempo, it vibrates and dances as never before.
True to the spirit and history of the Maison
Needles to say, color is also present, evoking the olfactory qualities of each scent. For the first time, the oval in the center is covered up in red, green, pink and blue respectively, softening the impact of the black and white elements. Devised by Yorgo Tloupas, a designer, a designer noted for his contemporary take on graphic design and his creative expertise in typography and logotypes, the new decorations for this limited edition collection offer an experience that is both visual and sensorial, thanks to a candle holder specially designed to accompany these candles.
